Busy Weekend Leads to 2 Commitments

17 Sep

A busy weekend of college coaches traveling around the Buckeye State to check out some of Ohio’s young talent produced some good recruiting storylines. Elsewhere, two of Ohio’s finest seniors made their college decisions public.

  • Vitto Brown– The 2013 Bowling Green PF committed to the University of Wisconsin on Friday afternoon. Brown chose the Badgers over Nebraska; as well as offers from Butler, Kansas State and Minnesota. A skilled and athletic four man at 6-foot-8, Brown has the mid-range jumper that Coach Ryan looks for in his forwards at Wisconsin, and also has the leaping ability to be a rim defender at the Big 10 level. Credit Badgers assistant coach Lamont Paris for generating the relationship between Wisconsin and Brown.

  • Aaron Jackson – The 2013 Gahanna Lincoln SG/SF made his commitment on Friday night, just a few hours after Brown, when he chose Akron University. Jackson had considered several other MAC options, most notably Ohio University, as well as schools like Drexel; before ultimately settling on the Zips. The size on the wing that Jackson possesses on the wing at 6-foot-5, combined with excellent athleticism, makes him a player that could make an early impact at the college level. Jackson has improved his shooting form over the off-season, and with his slashing skills he looks like a great get for Coach Dambrott and Akron.
  • Isaiah Johnson and Dontonio Wingfield Jr – The 2013 Cincinnati Walnut Hills duo, Johnson is a center while Wingfield is a wing guard, has had college coaches stopping by just about every single day to check out the seniors. On Sunday at an open gym, Miami (OH) and Akron stopped by to check out Johnson and Wingfield; while Manhattan and St. Francis (PA) are expected to stop by this week. Winthrop, Ohio University and Kent State also have stopped by. While Wingfield’s recruitment is being kept mostly under the table, Johnson is generally considered to be down to just Akron and Kent State.
  • Cleveland Central Catholic  and Cleveland Villa Angela-Saint Joseph’s have had coaches from Kent State, Illinois, West Virginia, Akron, Dayton, Cleveland State and Temple to check out some of the young 2015 talent that both schools have; as well as VASJ senior forward DeMonte Flannigan.
  • It seems like Northern Kentucky University is trying to snag another Ohio commitment to round out their 2013 class, and they Norse are checking out a pair of wings. While rumors link Lakota East SG Stedman Lowry to Hillsdale College (MI), one of the nation’s top D2’s, it looks like Ricardo Smith of Toledo Whitmer might be the guy that NKU ends up landing. Smith was at one point rumored to be close to choosing Findlay (D2) but is reportedly still considering Northern Kentucky. Speaking of Findlay, the Oilers extended an offer over the weekend to under the radar Lakota West guard Ali Barnes.
