Evaluation: Extremely skilled player with unmatched versatility on the court. “DJ” can play the PG, SG, or SF positions without any problem and possesses an outstanding level of court vision and basketball savvy. An elite ballhandler with smooth moves and understanding of time and space he is great attacking the rim where he moves fast but never out of control and finishing or passing it off. A strong build and good leaping ability make him an even bigger matchup problem because he can overpower when playing the PG or blow by when playing the SF all with his 6’4 long build. A hard working defender that is willing to do whatever his team needs. Wingfield has a solid jumper with nice rotation although his release can get a little bit flat and inconsistent.
Bottom Line: The jury is still out on what level DJ can play at collegiately. He clearly has high major talent, a high major body, and an advanced understanding of the game; but he has to tie all the together and turn it into consistent production with killer instinct. When he is playing his most focused basketball and looking to score he is an elite prospect.
Notes: Committed to Ohio University on October 1st, 2012.
